biography Gil Semedo is a singer, songwriter and producer from Cape Verde. He was born on October 25, 1974, on the island of Santiago, in Cape Verde, and emigrated at the age of six to the Netherlands, where he still lives today. He became interested in music from an early age, inspired by his idol Michael Jackson and his African cultural heritage. Gil Semedo began his musical career at the age of 15, when he imitated Michael Jackson on a Dutch television program called Sound Mix Show, presented by Henny Huisman. He reached the final of the competition and gained notoriety and admiration from the public. After that, he followed his own path as an artist, creating a unique musical style he called “Caboswing”, a mix of pop, zouk and Cape Verdean rhythms. In 1991, Gil Semedo released his first album, “Menina”, under the name Gil & The Perfects. The album was a success in Portuguese-speaking countries, especially in Cape Verde, where the song “Menina” became an anthem. Since then, Gil Semedo has released several albums, such as “Caboswing” (1994), “Nha Vida” (1996), “Nos Lider” (1998), “Sempri Lider” (2000), “Sucessos de Gil Semedo” (2002), “Best of Gil Semedo” (2004), “Positive” (2006) and “Nos Magia” (2010). He collaborated with artists such as Don Kikas, Suzanna Lubrano, Grace Évora and Beto Dias. Gil Semedo has sold more than 500,000 albums and received several gold and platinum records. He performed on various stages in Europe, the United States and Africa, attracting thousands of fans with his catchy songs and brilliant dance moves. Gil Semedo is considered one of the greatest Portuguese-speaking artists and the king of Cape Verdean pop. Gil Semedo is a music producer and has his own record label, Gil Music. It produces and supports new talents in Cape Verdean and African music. Gil Semedo is also a social activist and supports causes such as education, health and the environment.
