Biography
biography Jorge Manuel de Abreu Palma was born in Lisbon, on June 4, 1950. Jorge Palma is a Portuguese musician, singer and composer whose musical style is mainly pop rock. At the age of six, at the same time as he was learning to read and write, he began his piano studies at the Academia Musical dos Amigos das Crianças. At just eight years old, he held his first audition at the National Conservatory. During his adolescence, he became interested in rock’n’roll and American and English popular music. And it was around this time that he discovered the guitar. Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and Lou Reed became his biggest influences. In 1967, in the Algarve, Jorge Palma joined the group Black Boys as keyboardist. This first professional experience lasted around six months. From 1969 to 1971, while studying Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, he joined the pop-rock group Sindicato as keyboardist and singer. Jorge Palma's solo debut came with the single The Nine Billion Names of God (1972). His first single in Portuguese was released in 1973, entitled “A Última Canção”. Some of his most famous songs include “A Gente Vai Continuar”, “Encosta-te a Mim”, “Vida”, “Dá-me Lume”, “Frágil” and “Estrela do Mar”. Jorge Palma has already won several musical awards in Portugal. He won the José Afonso award in 2002 and was the winner of the Golden Globe in the category of best individual performer in 2008 and 2012. His album “Com Todo o Respeito” was also awarded by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores with the Pedro Osório award. More recently, he received the Língua Mãe Award, a joint initiative of the Portuguese Society of Authors (SPA) and CMTV.
